Driving an electric car can be very rewarding, knowing that you’re doing your part for the planet. Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, with many people choosing to swap their petrol or diesel vehicles for an EV.
One of the largest sources of climate pollution in the world is from transport emissions. In 2022, electric vehicles accounted for 2% of new car sales in Australia and it is predicted that around 66% of Australians will be driving electric cars by 2030.

How much does using a EV charger at home cost?
EVs are generally much cheaper to run than fossil fuel vehicles and so you can expect to save an average of $106.41 per month on fuel savings alone, which is a total average fuel saving of $1,277 per year.
The cost of charging an electric car depends on many factors, including if you’re using electricity from the grid or your own PV.
If you want a simple calculation for how it could work out for you and how much you could save in the long run; to fully charge your battery from near empty would be between $14.44 – $15.74.

Does it cost loads to install an EV charger at home?

Additionally, there may be grants and incentives available in your region that can help towards the cost.
Saving on cheaper energy
The best time to charge your vehicle is during the night and in the early hours, so you are best to plug in from between 11pm and 7am. Refrain from charging on your EV home charger between 2pm – 9pm as tariff prices are at their highest then.
It does depend on the EV you have, but on average, if you are charging from empty, then the zappi 7kW will fully charge a battery between 4 – 10 hours, and the 22kW zappi can do it in less than 2 hours!
Again, this depends on what model of EV you have, but you’ll find a lot of vehicles can do between 500kms and 600kms on a single charge. Some upcoming models, like the Tesla Roadster 2, are said to be able to run up to 1,000kms so we’ll have to wait and see!
