Our Top 3 Sustainable Companies in the UK

Three of the world’s 50 most sustainable large companies are based in the UK, according to a 2019 study by Forbes.

From Waitrose’s packaging-free trial to school pupils campaigning for climate action, an increasing number of British businesses and people are turning their attention to saving our planet, much to the delight of the myenergi Green Team!

Every single effort makes a huge difference in terms of climate change and renewability, but it is these three large corporations that are making arguably the most notable impact according to Forbes, with Unilever, Lloyds Banking Group and Spectris narrowly missing out on the top 50 but making it in the full top 100 list.

GlaxoSmithKline (gsk) is the highest UK company in this year’s honours list, occupying fifth place.

“A science-led global healthcare company with a special purpose: to help people do more, feel better, live longer.” That is the company motto of gsk. Founded in 2000, gsk is based in Brentford, Middlesex.

They are pioneering change in the renewables and sustainability sector with a range of initiatives and programmes, including their groundbreaking inhaler recycling and recovery scheme.

Complete the Cycle ensured that, by 2017, 1.2 million inhalers were recycled and recovered, saving “carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking 5,199 cars off UK roads.”

GlaxoSmithKline’s hard work to save our planet does not stop there, however. The company also invests funds into supporting the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which has a Seed Bank Partnership that aims to save 25% of the world’s plant species.

In 11th, sandwiched between Taiwan Semiconductor and Finland’s Outotec Oyj, is Pearson PLC, a London-based multinational publishing and education company.

Owner of Penguin books and once the largest book publisher in the world, Pearson PLC is a huge company steeped in history, but it is now looking  at how it can use its influence to build a better future.

As an educator of young people, the people at Pearson PLC have made it their responsibility to “create better lives for individuals, greater equality within society, and a more prosperous, sustainable world.”

How are they doing this? With their continued commitment to their 2020 Sustainability Plan, which aims to “integrate environmental and social issues into every aspect of our company” by educating people and developing sustainable products.

The final UK company in the top 50 is AstraZeneca, a “research-based biopharmaceutical company” with sites in Cambridge, Cheshire and Bedfordshire.

AstraZeneca’s sustainability strategy helped the company ensure that, in 2018, 61% of its total electricity was used from renewable sources. Last year also marked the third in a row that AstraZeneca were recognised in the CPD Climate Change List and Water Security List.

As a large corporate entity, AstraZeneca was also able to pledge $19m towards environmental efficiency projects in 2018.
