How to charge the Kia Xceed
The KIA XCeed PHEV is a plug in hybrid car growing in popularity in Ireland. Hybrid vehicles come in two different types, a self-charge and a plugin.
A self-charge hybrid will recharge the battery on the move using kinetic energy generated from the movement of the car including the wheels and gentle breaking. A plugin hybrid; however, works in a similar way to an electric car; in the sense that it does need to be plugged into the mains to charge up.
However, if the battery is used up on the KIA XCeed PHEV, it will switch to using petrol to keep you moving. Making it a great option for those worried about charging points on long journeys especially to some more remote areas of Ireland.
Should I choose a hybrid?
Plugin-hybrid
A plugin hybrid typically has a range of around 50 miles, plus a standard petrol or diesel car range, therefore you’ll get around 400-450 miles in total. A plugin-hybrid has a particular target audience, which is generally those who live within 20 miles of their place of work, but regularly travel long distance.
Plugin hybrids such as the KIA XCeed PHEV are perfectly suited to this lifestyle as the owner can frequently travel to and from work on the electric range, but not have to worry about finding charging stations when going long distance.
Should I choose a fully electric car?
Fully electric car
Electric cars can have a range of anywhere between 85 miles and 395 miles, with prices varying greatly but typically the higher the milage the higher the cost of the care. Therefore unless you’re looking to purchase at the top end, these are not frequently used as long-distance cars.
They certainly can handle the journey, but if you travel a lot for work, issues may arise when planning routes to ensure the electric car can be charged all the time. Electric cars are great for anyone who commutes less than 100 miles or only does the occasional long journey, luckily this is around 60% of the population of Ireland!
Can I charge the KIA XCeed PHEV at home?
The KIA XCeed PHEV uses a Type 2 charger, which is a typical home EV charger. The zappi can be plugged into the Xceed for three levels of charging based on your unique requirements and schedule.
Fast charging will charge your car directly from your own solar panels or from the grid as quickly as possible. Eco-charging is best used overnight when the costs of electricity are typically lower, and off-peak charging will take longer but ensure that you are charged at the lowest cost possible!
However, as the KIA XCeed PHEV is a hybrid, the battery is much smaller than your standard electric car and therefore it can also charge using a standard 3-pin charger, it will just take longer and will mean you cannot benefit from different charge modes.
What charger does the KIA XCeed PHEV use?
The KIA XCeed PHEV can use a standard Type 1, 120-volt charger, also known as a 3-pin charger. The charge time by using this form of charging is roughly 6 hours. Although this is considerably less than an electric car which can be upwards of 36 hours on a 3-pin charge.
Typically, owners opt for purchasing a Type 2 charger. The KIA XCeed PHEV will charge using a Type 2 charger, which can be used at home, work, or public charging points across the UK.
How much does it cost to charge the KIA XCeed PHEV?
The cost of charging any EV or plug-in hybrid always depends on a number of factors. From the type of charger used, location, and setting used. For example, rapid charging will typically cost more than eco charging done off-peak. However, if you’re looking to calculate the average cost of charging your KIA XCeed PHEV at home, this is around €3-€6 from empty to full based on the average energy costs in Ireland.
Charging your KIA XCeed PHEV using a rapid public charger will always cost slightly more, but is convenient for recharging when pressed for time or parked up for a period. Of course, we cannot comment for all public electric charging points as privately owned chargers can have their own rates and differences in tariffs.
What is the range on the new KIA XCeed PHEV (2024 model)?
The electric battery on the new KIA XCeed PHEV has a range of around the 47 – 58 km depending on driving conditions and other factors such as weather. This is then topped up with a petrol or diesel range.
Where is the charging port on the KIA XCeed PHEV?
The location of the charging port on the KIA XCeed PHEV is important, unlike pulling up at a fuel station where you can select the pump based on the fuel cap location. If you’re looking to install a home EV charger then you will need to be sure this will easily reach the location of your charging port on your electric car. The KIA XCeed PHEV charging point is located on the back of the driver side of the car.
