How does a solar EV charger work?

A solar EV charger works by allowing you to use excess solar to power up your car. Generating solar energy requires solar panels (PV) to be fitted to your home or place of work, but the energy generated through the solar panels is totally free, essentially giving you free miles!

Light energy produced by the sun is called a photon. It is the most basic, fundamental particle of all light. It is these photons in natural daylight that are converted by solar panel cells to produce electricity. This small bundle of electromagnetic energy is constantly in motion. Simply put, a solar panel works by allowing photons, or particles of light, to bounce into electrons setting them free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity.

Three Electric Car Charging Modes

This mode is a mixture of both green energy and energy imported from the grid. eco mode minimises the use of grid power and can charge using 100% green energy. The charging power is continuously adjusted in response to changes in generation or power being used elsewhere in the home.

If the surplus generation drops below 1.4kw some power will be drawn from the grid to top it back up.

Charge power is continuously adjusted in response to changes in generation or power consumption elsewhere in the home. Your electric car charging will pause if there is too much-imported power, continuing only when there is surplus free power available.

In this mode, the vehicle will be charged at maximum power. This power can come from a renewable energy source or simply from the grid. The cost of charging an electric car also depends on numerous factors including mode and the car itself.

If you don’t have solar panels or wind generation, zappi will charge just like an ordinary Mode 3 charging point.

Self-installation of EV chargers at home isn’t something we’d recommend unless qualified to do so for both safety and legislative reasons. We’d recommend approaching our network of qualified OZEV approved electricians for a quotation. This quotation will allow you to purchase a zappi and have the EV charger safety installed at your home.

Type 1 chargers have been phased out in favour of the superseding Type 2 connection type which have become the worldwide industry standard. A Type 1 plug has a total of five pins whereas a Type 2 has seven. Find out more about our chargers and smart EV chargers in our guides section.

Yes you can plug an electric car into a regular charging outlet, though you’d only be able to charge at the rate of 2.3kWh. This low rate of charging power, could take up to 26 hours to fully charge from empty, on a typical 60kWh battery. Hybrid vehicles tend to have very small batteries compared with fully electric vehicles and only require a slower trickle charge. The sale of hybrid vehicles will cease in 2035 in favour of fully electric EV’s. With the constant release of new electric vehicles to the market there is no straight forward answer as to how quickly it takes to charge an electric car, this answer is continually shifting and is dependent on the size of the vehicle battery and the type of charger used. However, the current average is around 8 hours from empty to full using a typical 7kWh home charger and 30 – 60 minutes using a public rapid charger.

Smart EV chargers in their simplest form are chargers which can be connected to the internet. The main purpose of this connection is to ensure that the device can be updated with firmware, especially as new software and technologies are released into the market. However, being smart also factors in the ability to utilise renewable energy sources and the ability to integrate with times of use and economy tariffs. Smart EV chargers can utilise energy harnessed from the sun, using solar panels (PV), to charge your EV. A typical 4kW – 6kW system would be sufficient enough to charge your electric car, however the larger the better, especially for multiple charge points. Home energy usage is measured in kW’s and the usage at any given time will fluctuate throughout the day. Solar panels have to be producing 1.4kW in order for the charging to kick in.

EV charger grants have to be claimed for on the customers behalf by an OZEV approved installer, whereby the grant is deducted from the quoted price to supply and install, for which the government office reimburses the installer. Whilst the home grant has come to an end for homeowners as of 31 March 2022, there are home grants still available for landlords, and the workplace charge scheme remains in place.
